Recommendation for charging VW ID4 and ID3

As of early 2022, VW ID4 and ID3 have no user control of the charging current, with the exception of the “Reduce AC Charging Current” Charging Option. When this option is engaged, it only charges at 8amps, which drastically lower than the typical 24 amps one would expected from a 30 amps circuit.

The car comes default with a EVSE (charging adapter) that plugs into a regular 120v socket, no 240V level 2 EVSE included.

The only way to influence the charge rate is by changing current rate of the EVSE. These are the known rates the ID4 supports

  • Level 1 10-amp (~1 kW): 2 Miles Of Range Per Hour

  • Level 2 16-amp (3.6 kW): 10 Miles Of Range Per Hour

  • Level 2 32-amp (7.7 kW): 20 Miles Of Range Per Hour

  • Level 2 40-amp (9.6 kW): 27 Miles Of Range Per Hour

  • Level 2 48-amp (11 kW): 32 Miles Of Range Per Hour

 

Thus the only recommend Level 2 charging configuration from splitvolt is a SPS C2-022 with a 24 amps EVSE (charging adapter). This will get you Level 2 16-amp (3.6 kW), 10 Miles Of Range Per Hour.
